Violet fluorite from Maine in the Morvan region (France)

Discover a small purple fluorite from Maine in the Morvan region (France).

The piece measures 7cm x 6cm. The Maine fluorite mine is located in Reclesne in Saône-et-Loire (Morvan) and was in operation from 1962 to 1983. The mine is currently closed and inaccessible.

Fluorite from Maine, in the Morvan region (Saône-et-Loire), is distinguished by its often well-formed cubic crystals, generally violet to mauve in color, sometimes accompanied by more subtle green or yellowish hues. Their size varies from a few millimeters to several centimeters, with faces that are sometimes slightly frosted or satiny. These fluorites line the late hydrothermal veins cutting through the granites and host rocks of the Morvan massif, often in association with quartz, barite, galena, and sphalerite. Some pieces reveal attractive color zoning, enhancing their aesthetic appeal, while their blue-violet fluorescence under UV light further accentuates their beauty. Less well known than those from Chaillac or La Barre, Maine fluorites are nevertheless highly prized by regional collectors for their typical Morvan charm.
