Pyromorphite from Asprières (12 Aveyron)

Discover some photographs of a pyromorphite from Asprières (12 Aveyron).

Pyromorphite from Asprières, sourced from ancient deposits in the area (notably the La Vidale deposit), is a fine regional example of this lead phosphate mineral (chemical formula Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl). The crystals, often a beautiful apple green to yellow-green colour, can occur in hexagonal prismatic form or in globular and botryoidal aggregates, sometimes on a vacuolar quartz matrix, an aesthetic sought after by collectors. Due to its high density (typically 6.5–7.1) and moderate hardness (Mohs scale ≈ 3.5–4), pyromorphite bears witness to the rich geochemical transformations in the oxidation zones of lead deposits. Pyromorphite from Asprières thus illustrates the remarkable mineralogical potential of the Aveyron region, offering specimens that are quite rare in France and prized as much for their scientific interest as for their beauty.
