Green fluorite from La Chaume in the Morvan (France)
Discover photographs of green fluorite from La Chaume in the Morvan region of France.
Fluorite from La Chaume, in the Morvan (Saône-et-Loire), most often occurs in well-formed cubes, ranging from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in size, with faces sometimes finely “frosted” by late corrosion. The colors range from bright purple to pale green, with distinct internal zoning—purple bands, colorless cores, or honey tones—highlighted by the typical transparency of the deposit. It lines or fills small late-Hercynian hydrothermal veins that cut across the Morvan granitoids and host rocks, often in association with barite, quartz, galena, and sphalerite, and more rarely calcite. Under UV light, a blue-violet fluorescence is common. The most sought-after pieces show aggregates of slightly stepped cubes set on quartz, offering a nice contrast and a very “Morvan” aesthetic.
